Maintain Safe Following Distance

One of the most common defensive driving mistakes is tailgating. Following too closely to the vehicle ahead significantly reduces your reaction time in emergencies.

The Three-Second Rule:

1. Pick a fixed point ahead (tree, sign, mile marker)
2. When the car ahead passes it, start counting
3. You should reach that point after 3 seconds
4. In bad weather or at night, use 6-8 seconds
