Defensive driving is a mindset that will protect you throughout your life as a driver.
The Defensive Driving Mindset:

- Never assume you're seen by other drivers
- Expect the unexpected
- Drive to conditions, not speed limits
- Prioritize safety over convenience
- Anticipate problems before they occur
Core Defensive Techniques:
Observation:
- Scan 20+ seconds ahead
- Check mirrors frequently
- Watch for unpredictable drivers
- Notice pedestrians and cyclists
- Identify hazards early
Space:
- Maintain 3+ second following distance
- Leave escape routes on all sides
- Avoid being trapped by other vehicles
- Position yourself for visibility
- Keep distance from aggressive drivers
Speed:
- Adjust for weather and road conditions
- Never drive too fast for visibility
- Slow down in unfamiliar areas
- Reduce speed at night
- Drive predictably, not aggressively
Control:
- Smooth steering inputs
- Gradual acceleration/braking

Situations to Avoid:
- Aggressive drivers
- Impaired drivers (call police)
- Fatigued driving (pull over and rest)

Building Habits:
- Practice defensive techniques every drive
